Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
What is VITA?
VITA is a partnership between the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) and other organizations to provide and promote free income tax return preparation for low to moderate-income taxpayers who cannot prepare their own returns.
According to IRS, there were 39 VITA sites operating across North Dakota into eastern Minnesota during the 2015 tax season, with over 346 volunteers providing these free tax services to low-income families.
How do I find a VITA site?
Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND) operates three VITA sites on the Ft. Berthold, Turtle Mountain, and Spirit Lake Indian reservations to assist low-income clients with their tax returns. LSND has been an IRS VITA partner since 1993 and each of our sites offer free electronic-filing (e-filing). To see if you qualify for services, for more information, or to make an appointment, please contact:
CENTRAL INTAKE OFFICE
9:00 am to 3:00 pm - Monday through Friday
If you do not reside near an LSND VITA site, you can find a North Dakota VITA site near you by calling IRS at 1-800-TAX-1040.
What are the advantages to using VITA?
All volunteers who prepare returns are certified by and receive their training directly from the IRS.
Free electronic filing (e-filing) is offered at most sites which enables taxpayers to receive their refunds in half the time as compared to filing a paper return. By using direct deposit into their bank accounts, taxpayers can receive their refunds even more quickly.
And because VITA tax return preparation is free, taxpayers are able to receive their ENTIRE REFUND without any preparation fees, e-filing fees, or refund anticipation loan fees.
